PLATEAU HAS LOST AN ICON SAYS REP BENI LAR

PLATEAU HAS LOST AN ICON

I am deeply saddened by the news of the demise of Sen Ignatius Longjang who passed away in a Turkish hospital.

Senator Ignatius Longjang was a humble, God fearing and peaceful man who’s humility endeared him to many across the Nation. As a diplomat, he carried out his Parliamentary duties with candor and wisdom.

This is a great loss to the people of Southern Plateau Senatorial Zone, Plateau State & Nigeria at Large.

My heart goes out to his wife, children & the rest of his family.

I pray his soul finds eternal rest at the bossom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

HON DIKET PLANG MOURNS SENATOR IGNATIUS DATONG LONGJAN

Tribute to Late Senator Longjan

I came close to our dear Baba Senator Longjan In 2008 when he was the Chief of Staff and I was an Adviser on InterGovernmental Affairs to Governor JANG by then and found in him a man of great honor.
We have indeed lost a Leader of unequal humility and sense of compassion. A selfless Elder statesman that places the interest of others first that even on the sickbed is worried about the plight and welfare of His people.
He was surely a man of high integrity with great contentment worthy of emulation. Oh a father and a detribalized leader that loves peace and harmonious relationship with humanity in all he does is gone!
I’m so scared and saddened with this departure at a critical period of great test on the Plateau.
Kai, we shall miss your humble and surprise visits to us. We shall miss your escorts to the car whenever we visit and your wise counsel all the time. We shall miss your true love.
May God almighty grant you rewards for your good deeds. May HE gracious forgive your human errors and grant you a blessed eternity.
Rest on Baba, your legacies are bright and clear!!

UN CALLS FOR DONATIONS TO TACKLE DESERT LOCUSTS IN AFRICA

The UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs called on the international community Monday to help East African countries affected by locust swarms, expressing his deep concern over the situation.

“There are 13 million people in the affected countries who are severely food insecure now,” said Mark Lowcock during a UN press conference. “Ten million of those people are in the places affected by locusts.”

Lowcock, who said he had recently released $10 million for the crisis, warned that “unless there was a rapid response, we are going to have a huge problem later in the year.”

The locusts have devastated food supplies in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. They were reported in Uganda on Sunday.

According to Lowcock, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated at the end of January that a locust control plan would cost $76 million.

“What we have so far is just $20 million,” he said.

“Unless we get a grip of this in the next two or three or four weeks, we are worried we are going to have a really serious problem.”

Lowcock said the locust outbreak was “the worst for 70 years in Kenya, for 25 years in Ethiopia, Somalia,” and said one of the reasons behind the swarms was climate change.

Desert locusts — whose destructive infestations cause major crop damage — are a species of grasshopper that live largely solitary lives until a combination of conditions promote breeding and lead them to form massive swarms.

The FAO says the current invasion is known as an “upsurge” — when an entire region is affected — however, if it gets worse and cannot be contained, over a year or more, it would become what is known as a “plague” of locusts.

There have been six major desert locust plagues in the 1900s, the last of which was in 1987-89. The last major upsurge was in 2003-05.

MAN SENTENCED TO 21 MONTHS FOR ATTEMPTED THEFT

A Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan has sentenced a man, Tobias Solomon, to 21 months in a correctional facility for an attempt to commit an offense of theft.

Solomon was charged with criminal trespass, mischief and attempt to commit an offense of theft contrary to Sections 333, 313 and 57 of the Kaduna State Penal Code.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Esther Bishen had told the court that one Akuna Emmanuel reported the matter at the divisional police station, Kafanchan, on Feb. 3.

Bishen said the complainant alleged that the suspect trespassed into his house and attempted to steal some property and was caught.

When the charges were read to him, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency, but failed to produce any character witness.

The prosecutor, thereafter, prayed the court to try him summarily in line with Section 125 (8) of the Criminal Justice Law of Kaduna State.

In her ruling, the Presiding Judge, Mary Adams, sentenced him to three months or a fine of N15, 000 for criminal trespass, six months or N15, 000 for mischief and one year or N10, 000 for attempted theft, all to run concurrently.
