UNIVERSITY OF JOS HONOURS OKEBUKOLA, NASREDDIN WITH HONORIS CAUSA


THE Senate and the Governing Council of the University of Jos would this Saturday, confer on the former Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission [NUC] Professor Peter Akinsola Okebukola, with the Doctor of Science Degree Honoris Causa [D.Sc] for his outstanding contribution to the development of Science Education and scientific inventions in teaching methodology.
Also to benefit in the same gesture is an international business mogul and entrepreneur, Dr. Attia A. Nasreddin, of NASCO Group of Companies, with the Doctor of Business Degree Honoris Causa [DBA] for his distinctive business acumen and pioneering during a stellar career a top one of Nigeria’s foremost manufacturing conglomerates.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Seddi Sebastian Maimako, made the disclosure Monday, while addressing journalists at the Senate Chamber of the University on the occasion marking the 31st and 32nd combined convocation ceremonies in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The VC said, “I am particularly elated to announce that the University Senate has approved and the Governing Council has ratified the conferment of Honorary Degree on two very distinguished personalities who both are internationally renowned for their contribution to national development and human upliftment.
“ Professor Peter Akinsola Okebukola, a distinguished scholar of international repute and former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission [NUC] will be conferred with the Doctor of Science Degree Honoris Causa [D.Sc.] for his outstanding contribution to the development of the education especially Science Education and for his scientific inventions in teaching methodology.
“The International Business Mogul and Entrepreneur, Dr. Attia A. Nasreddin, will be conferred with the Doctor of Business Degree Honoris Causa [DBA] for his distinctive business acumen and pioneering leadership during stellar career a top one of Nigeria’s foremost manufacturing conglomerates”, he disclosed.
Prof. Maimako, however, outlined the line up of the convocation activities to include football match on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 by 3pm; exhibition of various research outputs, inventions, artefacts, artworks, drawing and paintings Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th December; Friday 6th would be commissioning ceremony of newly completed projects in the University by Professor Suleiman Elias Bogoro, while the Convocation Lecture by Professor Dakas CJ Dakas ,SAN, as it climax with the main day on Saturday 7th respectively.

SMART ADEYEMI SWORN IN AS SENATOR…

Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Wednesday took his oath of office to represent Kogi West in the Senate.

The swearing-in was done by the Clerk of the Senate, Nelson Ayewoh, at the start of plenary.

His swearing-in comes three days after he was pronounced winner of the Kogi West senatorial district rerun election.

He will replace the Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who lost his bid to retain his seat in the Senate.

Mr Adeyemi is returning to the Senate about five years after he lost the seat to Mr Melaye at the 2015 election.

At the end of the senatorial election on Saturday, Mr Adeyemi polled 88,373 votes while Mr Melaye recorded 62,133 votes, according to the results announced by the returning officer, Olajide Lawal.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had over a week ago declared the election inconclusive because the margin between Mr Adeyemi and Mr Melaye is lower than the number of “registered voters in 53 polling units of the 20 registration areas in the zone where elections were cancelled.”

After the main election on November 16, Mr Adeyemi polled 80,118 votes while Mr Melaye polled 59,548 votes in the election characterised by violence, ballot box snatching and vote buying.

The margin of 20,570 votes between the two candidates was far less than the 43,127 registered voters in the 53 polling units where elections were cancelled; hence, the rerun.

Mr Melaye has vowed to challenge the result of the election in court.

SEN. HEZEKIAH DIMKA PROMISES DIVIDENDS OF DEMOCRACY TO CONSTITUENTS


SENATOR representing Plateau Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Abuja, Senator Hezekiah Dimka has promised to give the needed dividends of democracy to the people of the Zone, especially now that is time for governance.
Senator, Dimka stated this during his constituency’s thank you tour to Pankshin, Mangu, Bokkos, Kanam and Kanke Local Government Areas (LGAs), last Friday and Saturday.
The lawmaker while addressing the large crowd of his party supporters at the 5 LGAs headquarters expressed happiness with the support given him during election, to Tribunal and also the Appeal Court that were filed against his victory by his opponent in the PDP challenging his victory during the last election.
Senator, Dimka told all his party’s supporters across the 5 LGAs that the purpose of his tour was to say thank you to them for the wonderful support given him, saying that his words cannot thank them enough stressing that it is only God that would bless them for the support.
Dimka told his supporters that it was never in his character to do the thank you tour now, but it was due to the cases filed against his victory in the Tribunal to Appeal Court, which were all upheld in his favour and now gave him the confidentces to go round and thanked them.
He also told his supporters to exercise a little patience’s, especially in the area of projects, saying that he was still waiting for the signing of the 2020 budget by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that he has so far earmarked different projects for the people of his constituency.
He assured them they would not regarded given him the mandate to serve as a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, saying that their interest would always put on the table not under the table.
The law-maker urged the people of his zone to always think about what he would do to them that would benefit every ody rather than coming to him as an individuals or groups to collect money, saying that he is now representing the entire constituency no only one party and appealed to the people of his zone to also rally him around with advise that would move the constituency forward.
Senator, Dimka said that he would place priority to youths and women empowerment, which he said was very key to him, because it would, no doubt go a long way in reducing in the increasing rate of poverty and crime, especially amongst the youths, adding that his plan were to also embark on projects that would have direct bearing on the lives of people within his constituency.
The law-maker climax the thank you tour with the commissioning of his constituency office at Pankshin LGA, adding that liason offices would be opening across the 5 LGAs, so as to enable people to always channel whatever issue that they might have that is for the progress of the constituency as all times.
Senator Dimka has also approved and presented appointments letters to 105 Senior Special Assistants (SSA) and Special Assistants (SA) across the 5 LGAs of his constituency
Senator Dimka shortly after presented the appointment letter to the 105 SSAs and SAs told them to conduct themselves with high sense of decorum while discharging their various duties assigned to them in order to further move the constituency to an enviable heights.
He said that he was planning to have town hall meeting across the 5 LGAs of the constituency, where he would interact with the people of the zones, in order to know what they want or need in times of projects.
Senator Dimka while in Bokkos also commiserated with the people of the area over the fire incidents which led to burning down of 16 shops at the Bokkos Central market, where he also made the donation of # 1 million cash shortly to the victims after he was taken round the burning shops.
The law-maker also in Bokkos LGA said that he would do everything possible to see that the uncompleted Panyam, Bokkos Wamba roads is revisited, so that it would be capture among the federal roads that were still uncompleted.
In their separate remarks, Chairman of the 5 LGCs and the traditional rulers all appreciated the Senator for finding time to come and thank them, describing him not only as good leader but as an excellent leader and assured the Senator of their continue support urging him to seriously look into completion of the abandon Payam, Bokkos, Wamba road, so as to boost business and economy activities within the zone.

PFN ADVISES GOV LALONG NOT TO BE DISTRACTED BY PRAISE SINGERS, CRITICS


Religious leaders under the aegis of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) yesterday advised Plateau state Governor Simon Lalong ,not to be distracted by praise singers and critics.
The group led by Rev. Stephen Dangana, Chairman, Plateau Chapter of PFN gave the advice in Jos, when they paid a courtesy call on the governor.
He said “Remain focus on what you are doing, don’t be distracted by those that may praise you in your presence.”
“Only God knows what they may say behind you.
“Don’t also allow those who may criticise and even insult you, don’t follow what they are saying or doing in order not be distracted.
“Continue to look up to God in everything you do because it is God who sets up kings and it is God that dethrones kings,” he said.
According to him, human beings trust their strength, wisdom and ability but stated that strength and wisdom come from God.
They congratulated governor Lalong for his re-election and described it as an act of God.
Speaking at the occasion, Lalong told the clerics that it is the prayers of people like them that is sustaining the state and making the impossible possible.
The governor said that his philosophy is to face his enemy with love as love could neutralize enmity.
“Plateau is blessed, nobody can take that away from us. As a matter of fact we are the Jerusalem of Nigeria.
“When we pray God will forgive us and bring back the glory of Plateau and that is happening now with the return of peace,” he said.
He assured the clerics that he would continue to work for peace in state.
He said that there could be no
development without peace.
Lalong further said his adminstration is determined to better the lives of citizens of the state .

PLATEAU STATE GOVERNMENT SUES FOR COOPERATION FROM CITIZENS AS “OPERATION ZERO POTHOLES” INTENSIFIES- DAN MANJANG ..

The on going “Operation Zero Potholes” is not only to restore road infrastructure in the state capital and environs but to enhance social and economic activities as well as the beauty of the state capital.
Consequently, citizens within areas of operation and motorists are expected to cooperate and be patient as they move within the city.
State Commissioner of Information and Communication Dan Manjang in a Press Release in Jos express the commitment of the Governor Simon Lalong led Rescue Administration to walk the talk in whatever pronouncement it makes regarding its policy thrust.
Manjang said the rehabilitation of roads could pose challenges to road users and residents in affected areas and assures the long term benefits far outweigh the the temporary inconveniences.
He implored residents to be vigilant and report any suspected shoddy work and at the same time ensure they jealously protect public infrastructure.
The state Information and Communication Commissioner Dan Manjang said with the Installation of street lights in the city, Jos will be a place to behold on completion of roads rehabilitation there.
Dan Manjang assures that whenever the task force on evacuating traders from the streets of Jos is constituted, measures will be taken to ensure that they do not return to litter and tarnish them.

DSS UNCOVERS PLAN TO DESTABILIZE NIGERIA

The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered syndicated plots by some undesirable groups to cause a breakdown of law and order in various parts of the country including Abuja. The arrangement is to instigate protests, mass action and violence with a view to causing anarchy and destabilizing the country.

These predetermined actions have been designed to take place simultaneously in the major cities across the geopolitical zones in the coming weeks. This is more so that the plotters are also targeting the yuletide seasons to accomplish their sinister motives.

Considering the implications of these on public safety and national security, the Service wishes to warn the anti-democratic elements responsible for these heinous plots to desist forthwith from their inglorious acts.

Consequently, parents are advised to rein in their wards and enjoin them not to allow themselves to be used to foment trouble. Similarly, Heads of academic and public institutions are to warn their students and employees respectively from engaging in any untoward activity against public order.

The Service and other sister agencies are at alert and will ensure that peace and security are maintained in all parts of the country before, during and after the festive periods. Law abiding citizens are equally encouraged to go about their normal businesses without fear but report any suspected persons or breach of peace to the nearest security office to them.

PLATEAU STATE INTRODUCES CONTRIBUTORY HEALTHCARE SCHEME TO CATER FOR CITIZEN’S NEED

Plateau State government has established the State Contributory Health Care Management Agency, PLASCHEMA to cater for the health needs of its citizens and achieve universal health coverage in the State.
The Agency is among other things mandated to regulate the cost of healthcare and ensure adequate distribution of healthcare facilities across the 17 located government areas of the State.
To achieve the mandate, the Director-General of the Agency, Dr Fabong Jemchang organized a five-day workshop for critical stakeholders who would work directly to develop a blueprint and operational guidelines as well as harness private sector participation in the scheme.
Nigeria is not ready to be the “giant of Africa”
Speaking at the event, Jemchang stressed that his agency, having been mandated to “regulate, supervise and implement State Social Health Insurance Scheme to provide universal health coverage for every resident of the State” would work to “ensure financial protection form individuals and families from huge medical bills and ensure equal distribution of health cost across different income groups.”
He noted that out of pockets expenditure on health has threatened many citizens hence “the Agency is poised to strengthen health financing by pooling resources and through strategic purchasing, mitigate high out of pocket expenditure and poor health insurance coverage for citizens.”
While maintaining the workshop is necessary to prepare those responsible for the attainment of universal health coverage with the required knowledge and skills, he tasked the stakeholders to give their best and enable the Agency function optimally and meet its deliverables and bring hope to the people.

The workshop brought together professionals in the health sector, members of the civil society organizations, trade unions, the media, community and religious leaders among others to sensitize them on the need to embrace the scheme and ensure members of their communities key into it for effective healthcare delivery

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong says sustained hosting of land mark activities in the state is testimony of the restoration of peace in the state.
As such Governor Lalong assures he will continue to take deliberate measures to open up the state to the rest of the world for social and economic development.
In a press statement after participating in the annual Plateau Radio Television “Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony” on 1st December 2019 at Rayfield to ursher in the Yuletide activities in the state, the Governor thanked citizens for keying into the first policy thrust of his administration which focuses on “Peace,Security & Good Governance.
The statement issued by Dan Manjang, State Commissioner of Information and Communication quotes the Governor as assuring that the PRTV event which coincides with the yearly musical extravaganza “ Jos Chilling” will henceforth attract top Music acts from the state and those who cut their teeth in Jos.
He said his administration has embraced the Christmas Tree Lighting because of its spiritual significance and its message of peace that resonates across the world.
Lalong thanked security agencies,non state actors, traditional, religious and youth leaders for their effort in peace building.
He implored youth to desist from social vices and not to allow themselves to be used to foment crises.
High point of the event was the lighting up of the Christmas Tree with fireworks lighting up the dark sky.
Veteran gospel music act Panam Percy Paul, fast rising star Niken Chuwang & Plateau born secular rap artiste Ice Prince Zamani were among performers who thrilled the large audience.

FACTORS TO DETERMINE OUR CHOICE FOR 2023 PRESIDENCY__NORTHERN STUDENTS

The president, Association of Northern Nigerian Students (Gamji), Haruna Yusuf Abba, has said competence and credibility will be their guiding principle in electing political leaders in 2023 and not any other consideration. Speaking with our correspondent, Abba said unfortunately, people were now counting colossal losses because their chosen leaders have failed because they were elected on the basis of affiliations, religion, ethnicity and region.
Abba said they will always promote peace and unity among all students and as well as inculcate in them patriotism and love for one another irrespective of their differences.

“As students we are keenly following the statements and activities of some elders from our region, This time around, we won’t allow candidates with questionable character and incompetence to lead us. Competency and credibility will guide us in 2023.
“We don’t need leaders with well sewn kaftans and designers, but leaders that can address the challenges facing the northern region like, poverty, illiteracy, insecurity, banditry and kidnapping. “These among others are issues facing the region and we are tired of pretending that all is well,” he said.
