It’s always said that a Golden fish has no hidding place. Dr SIPAK SHASE’ET is an outstanding leader and a humanitarian philanthropist
It’s in line with this that the African youths initiative for good governance and peace finds him worthy of recognition for the NELSON MANDELA Outstanding leadership honor award as a humanitarian and an advocate of good governance and peace
As a man of integrity Dr Sipak Shase’et always said and I quote “the supreme quality for leadership is unquestionable integrity” Without integrity, no real success is possible.
As a leader and man of honor Dr SIPAK encouraged and adviced the African youths initiative to be of good conduct and shun any display of character that will bring disunity among its people.
He also called on them to be ambassadors of peace and engaged themselves in activities that will bring progress to the country and Africa at large.
Muslim-majority Burkina Faso has been hit by a wave of violence by militant Islamists in recent years. Christmas Eve saw more than 30 people, mostly women, killed in a suspected jihadist attack.
But behind such grim headlines lies a more complex picture. The country has a history of religious tolerance, and it is not uncommon to see families made up of both Muslims and Christians, who make up about 23% of the population.
Journalist Clair MacDougall visited one such family in the capital, Ouagadougou.
Five-year-old Iris Osnia Ouattara is being raised by her parents in Burkina Faso in both the Catholic tradition of her father, Denis Ouattara, and the Muslim tradition of her mother, Afoussatou Sanou.
She is celebrating Christmas but also celebrates the Islamic festival of Eid.
At home in Ouagadougou, one of the photos that is proudly displayed is of Iris meeting Father Christmas when she was a baby. The photograph was taken back in 2015 at an office party at the cement company where Denis works.
While he is passing on a sense of Christian identity to Iris, Afoussatou is teaching her about Islam.
“She accompanies me to the mosque and on Sunday she goes to church with him,” Afoussatou says.
Afoussatou prays five times a day at home, but on Fridays she goes to the mosque with Iris.
Her daughter will also often get up with her before sunrise to perform the first prayer of the day.
“Islam is a religion that promotes tolerance and the acceptance of others in their way of seeing things,” she says.
Through a simple Islamic primer, Iris learns how to perform ablutions and pray.
Other books in the house include a well-thumbed Christian book of Psalms.
Denis and Afoussatou have lived together since meeting six years ago in Toussiana, a rural town 55km (34 miles) from Burkina Faso’s second city, Bobo Dioulasso.
They plan on marrying next year in a ceremony that honours both of their religious traditions.
Denis is open to temporarily converting, which, the couple say, some Christian men do for the Islamic ceremony to appease the bride’s relatives before converting back.
“When we decided to get married we met some opposition,” says Denis, whose father was initially hesitant.
“In the beginning it was very complicated. My father doesn’t have a problem but my mother does,” says Afoussatou. “If the man is Christian and the woman is Muslim, in general it is the parents of the woman who refuse.”
She is still trying to persuade her mother to approve of the relationship.
Many Burkinabé families are a mixture of Christians, Muslims and animists and both Christians and Muslims are often welcomed into each other’s places of worship.
The country has historically been held up as an exemplar of religious tolerance.
Afoussatou has many Christian friends and while she will not be going to church on Christmas Day she will be celebrating with her partner’s family.
She says she celebrates “all of the holidays: Ramadan, Eid al-Adha, Christmas”.
On Christmas Day, the Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception will be full of worshippers.
Armed police are expected to be outside this and other churches. Islamist militants have targeted Christians, as well as Muslims, in recent attacks.
In the lead up to Christmas, church leaders have warned congregants to be vigilant, not to carry large bags, to report anything unusual and to respect the security forces.
Near the cathedral, people who fancy decorating their homes can buy a plastic Christmas tree dusted in fake snow.
On Christmas Day Denis will take Iris to the King Christ Parish of Pissy in Ouagadougou, before the whole family, including Afoussatou, meets at Denis’ uncle’s house.
“My religion teaches me to love and accept other people,” says Denis. “It is only God who can judge.”
Iris’ parents will let her decide which religion she wants to follow when she gets older. But for the moment, she can be seen at both the church and the mosque.
Denis and Afoussatou would be happy with whatever choice she makes.
“Love is higher than any religion,” says Denis, who believes all faiths hold a universal truth.
The members of Southern Plateau Youth Congress (S-PYCO) wishes to express their shocked and total dismay over the heart ugly news of an unprecedented and unprovoked attack on innocent souls in Kulben village of Kombun District, Mangu LGA some days back.
This sad event occurred when Plateau state is on the verge of fastly restoring it’s peaceful nature as the slogan implies “Home of Peace and Tourism.”
We want to make our position known that this nonsense must stop because 99.99% of the people of Plateau State want to live in peace. The 99.99% of us across all religious and tribal divides have found ourselves in the middle of the crossfire coming from the 0.01% of the troublemakers from among us. We urge all to speak with one voice and condemn the gruesome murder of 13 of our brothers in the locality.
We therefore, render our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the bereaved families, Mwagavul nation and the entire state as a whole and pray that God almighty will rest their souls and that of the faithful departed in peace. May the curse of God be on whoever is against peace on the Plateau.
In as much as we condemned the destardly and inhuman act by the hudlums, let’s demystify the sound of the drums of war by beating our drums of peace we stands for even louder to the dismay of haters of peaceful coexistence.
We also urged the government and all security outfit in the state not only to arrest and prosecute the papetrators of this dirty act but be proactive in dealing with such ugly occurrences in the future.
Long Live Plateau State
(JESUS OUR SAVIOUR.).
Our attention has been drawn to a report titled, “269 Reps yet to sponsor any bill in six months” published by Newtelegraph Newspaper on Wednesday, January 8th, 2020 wherein information about our principal, Rt Hon Yusuf Gagdi, the Honourable Member Representing the good people of Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam was distorted.
Ordinarily, we wouldn’t have bothered to write this rejoinder because our Prinicpal performance in less than seven months in office has been the talk of town and has put to rest the dismal representation various constituencies in Plateau State have been subject to, but considering the manner certain persons have been circulating the said news on social media platforms mentioning the name of our superlative principal with the aim of presenting him as a non performing legislator in terms of law making before the public, necessitated that for record purposes, we state the true picture of what transpired as follows:
1. It is totally untrue that Rt Hon Yusuf Gagdi is yet to sponsor any bill or motions in the 9th House of Representatives.
2. Since the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly on June 11, 2019, both chambers have jointly initiated 688 bills, with the House accounting for 499 and the Senate, 189.
3. These bills are at different stages of consideration, while some have been passed, including two executive bills: the 2020 appropriation and finance bills.
4.The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Act (Amendment) Bill, 2019 sponsored by our principal, Rt Hon Yusuf Gagdi has passed 1st, 2nd and 3rd reading and has been passed by the National Assembly awaiting the assent of President Buhari. It is instructive to note that Rt Hon Yusuf Gagdi is the only National Assembly Member from Plateau State to have achieved this rare feat which is unprecedented. This can be confirmed in the House hansard of Wednesday, 18th December.
5. If those circulating the said publication for the purpose of discrediting Rt Hon Yusuf Gagdi were very much familiar with the working of the NASS, they would have known that lawmaking is not about the number of bills one sponsors but the number he or she is able to get passed into law. To the glory of God Almighty, the bill of Rt Hon Yusuf Gagdi awaiting the President assent will be signed into law. Already, one of his motion has come to fruition as NIN requirement as a precondition for the UTME and DE registrations has been set aside for this year’s registrations by JAMB.
6. Without sounding boastful, we wish to state unequivocally that Rt Hon Yusuf Gagdi has performed credibly well in the areas of lawmaking, oversight, and representation which are the primary functions of legislators.
This rejoinder does not in any way seek to engage in competition with anyone but to set the record straight.
The past six months has been eventful as the good people of Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam have been trilled to an unprecedented representation never seen as close to two hundred constituents have been take off the labour market courtesy of Rt Hon Yusuf Gagdi. Also a legislative blueprint has been unveiled among other interventions and by the grace of God Almighty, the days ahead presents better opportunities.
